性質描述: 白色至綠黃色針狀或柱狀結晶。熔點148-149℃。溶于甲醇、乙醇、苯、乙酸及50%醇水混合液。干燥結晶性質穩(wěn)定，但其溶液甚至在遮光下也能分解氧化。該品溶液遇三氯化鐵呈紅色。

用途: 5,5-二甲基-1,3-環(huán)己二酮可以與醛類形成不溶性的縮合物，而且與不同的醛生成的縮合物熔點不同，與酮類則沒有這個性質。這個性質可用于醛類的鑒定，因此醛試劑可用來分離或檢驗醛類。它還可用作呱啶的催化劑和色層分析試用劑。
